Welcome to Tarbert, Kintyre.

Tarbert, also knows as the 'Gateway to the Isles' is a west coast gem. The village of Tarbert is renowned throughout Europe for its fresh seafood caught from in Loch Fyne, the sea loch just by Tarbert, and around the west coast and isles close by. You can buy fresh shellfish and seafood in the village, so if you are staying in a Tarbert Self Catering accommodation you can enjoy cooking your own. Hotels and restaurants of course have seafood on their menus all year round.

Walkers will love Tarbert, and the village provides access to the start of the much loved Kintyre Way, a walk which covers the length and breadth of the Kintyre peninsula offering clean air, some stunning views, and to experience the culture and variety of the locations that it links together.

The views across Loch Fyne from Tarbert Royal Castle remains are just one of the great things about this small village, and one of the historic sides to an interesting and colourful past. Tarbert Castle is said to be one of the places where once King Robert The Bruce (more officially known as Robert I, King of the Scots) stayed, it is certainly noted as such, and he may well have spend some time here when he was on the run during 1305, where King Robert I headed south down Kintyre and, as legend has it, escaped to Rathlin Ireland from the Mull of Kintyre hiding in a cave.

The castle keep is all that remains, with the inner walls under grass, the outer walls visible in aspect, but you can still get a feel for the majestic nature of the castle and its superb views especially up and across Loch Fyne.

Loch Fyne, and Tarbert have a close historic connection with herring. In the 1800s Tarbert was a busy herring port, one of Scotlands few officially registered ports for landing herring. The skiffs used to fill a large part of the inner harbour employing several hundred fishermen who fished for the 'silver darling' using drift and ring net methods. The herring have been largely overfished and all but wiped out.

Tarbert is also a modern place to live and work, welcomes hard working community minded citizens, and continues to be an important location for people to stay who would like access to local ferries and travel routes, or for people exploring Kintyre.

Tarbert events such as its annual Seafood Festival, Music Festival and Yacht Race are part of its appeal, and its just as much fun to be involved as it is to attend. Tarbert welcomes you all year round.
